The Basics
Site investigations invariably include the analysis of soil, groundwater and air for contaminants. As the subsurface environment is quite heterogeneous, detailed site characterization can help focus the selection and application of remediation solutions, thereby reducing costs substantially.
The US EPA and other federal and state agencies have developed analytical methodologies and quality assurance and quality control procedures to achieve rigorous data quality objectives. Throughout the United States there are numerous laboratories dedicated to the environmental marketplace. Typical turn-around times can vary significantly; frequently, you must pay a premium for the rapid reporting of the data. Even so, you may not get the results for samples collected in the morning for up to two days.
Clearly, EPA and others have recognized the benefit of real time data acquisition that can inform the investigative process and decisions regarding where to collect subsequent samples. The approach is often better, faster and cheaper than sending samples to an off-site laboratory.
Unfortunately, the vast majority of mobile laboratory companies typically have few instruments and limited capacity.
